"Dhammo Hawe Rakkhathi Dhammachari"

There are a lot of historical ruins all over this land which was known as Kottiaram Patthu in the former royal days of the Northern Province. These ruins are located in the thick jungle and outdoors. This area is known as the land of a million monasteries (Kottiyaram) because of the prosperity that existed here at that time.

Welioya was founded as a Mahaweli movement in 1984, and the first settlement was established at the village of Ethawetunwewa. The people who cleared the jungles and built huts chose Sri Udumbararama Rajamaha Viharaya for their religious activities, which was also a site with historical ruins. During the 80s, the Dimbulagala Seelalankara Swamindra stayed in this temple and ordained many other caste children and created a religious revival in this area.

Due to the terrorist attacks, the people as well as the lords had left these villages. Another group lived in these villages. At this time, a program to proselytize the people of Atawatunwewa village was also implemented through various non-governmental organizations and fundamentalist religious organizations, taking into account the economic hardships of the people.

By the year 2003, Sri Udumbararama Rajamaha Vihara at Ethawetunwewa was dying due to the lack of a monk, and at that time Reverend Ranavana Dhamminda Nayaka Swami, who was working at Nochchiyagama Oluwewa Weheragala Rajamaha Vihara, while also holding the position of Registrar of the Nochchiyagama Regional Religious Authority, visited this temple. The intervention of Brigadier Gunaratne, Sergeant Piyasena of the 5th Infantry Army and the people of Atawatunwewa village should be greatly appreciated in order to bring him to this temple.

In this way, under very limited facilities, initially with the contribution of the villagers as well as the military officers of the nearby military headquarters and civil defense force officers, many unnecessary temples were built in the temple. In this way, Ranavana Saddharma Keerthi Sri Swarnajothi Dhammindabhidhana Gurudeva Nayaka Mahimipa performed a great service for the improvement of the temple.

After that, Lord Swamindra visited the Mayuravapi temple in Monarawewa and the guardianship of the temple was entrusted to Muditha Thera of Atawetunwewa. He is still working in the temple and doing great service for the development of the temple.

At present, the temple's Sanghavasa, Bodhi wall, Dharma Hall, and Sunday school buildings have been built to normal levels. Similarly, although the construction of the Buddha Mandir started a decade ago, due to economic difficulties, it has not yet been possible to complete the work. Currently, the statue of the Buddha Mandir is being prepared and the interior paintings are being created.

It will be a great blessing if you contribute to the construction of the necessary temple facilities in this temple located in a very difficult village in the Mullaitivu district of the Northern Province.
